NYC Mayor-Elect Zohran Mamdani Faces Backlash for $13 Beer at Victory Party

Zohran Mamdani, who made history as the first Muslim, South Asian mayor of New York City, is under fire for charging attendees at his victory party. Photos from the celebration, shared by Politico journalist Jeff Coltin on X, revealed a cash bar with beers priced between $13 and $16, including Pabst Blue Ribbon and Stickett Inn cider.

While Mamdani’s win over former Governor Andrew Cuomo and Republican Curtis Sliwa was historic, the high drink prices have ignited criticism online, especially from supporters who expected a complimentary toast.

Social Media Reacts: ‘$13 for a Bud Light?’

Comments on X quickly went viral:

·         “$13 for a glass of beer at his victory party? Can’t wait to see his grocery prices…”

·         “No free beer? I thought Mamdani was for free everything.”

·         “$13 for a Bud Light?! Even his campaign staff expected drinks to be free after all their hard work.”

Critics also point to the mayor-elect’s socialist platform, which includes proposals like free buses, arguing the beer pricing seems contradictory to his progressive stance. Adding fuel to the fire, Mamdani recently sought donations for his transition committee, and Governor Kathy Hochul reportedly dismissed the idea of free buses in NYC, a key campaign promise.

A Lesson in Celebration or Controversy?

The incident highlights the delicate balance politicians must strike between public image and practical event management. For Mamdani, a historic win is now entwined with an unexpected PR challenge—managing public perception while transitioning into his new role as NYC mayor.
