‘Repeated Electoral Failure, Frustration’: Ex-Judges and Bureaucrats Slam Rahul Gandhi for Attacking Election Commission

New Delhi: A group of 272 retired judges, former civil servants, and ex-armed forces officers have strongly criticised Congress leader Rahul Gandhi for his repeated attacks on the Election Commission of India (ECI), calling his allegations “unsubstantiated”, “provocative”, and an “assault” on India’s constitutional institutions.

‘Repeated Electoral Failure, Frustration’: Ex-Judges and Bureaucrats Slam Rahul Gandhi for Attacking Election Commission

The signatories, in a letter titled “Assault on National Constitutional Authorities”, expressed concern over what they described as a systematic campaign to undermine bodies such as the Election Commission. The letter was led by Justice S.N. Dhingra, former Delhi High Court judge, and Nirmal Kaur, former DGP of Jharkhand.

‘Unbelievably uncouth rhetoric’: Letter attacks Rahul Gandhi

The letter accuses Rahul Gandhi of repeatedly using harsh language against the EC, particularly over his “vote chori” (vote theft) allegations linked to the SIR (Sampled Indian Results) exercise.

“Instead of offering genuine policy alternatives, some political leaders resort to unsubstantiated accusations in theatrical political strategies,” it states.

The signatories argue that the Congress leader has cast aspersions on several national institutions in the past, including the Armed Forces, Judiciary, and Parliament, and is now targeting the Election Commission with a “conspiratorial narrative”.

According to the letter, Rahul Gandhi even suggested that once the Chief Election Commissioner and Election Commissioners retire, “he will hound them”, adding that he has “100 per cent proof” of vote theft.

Criticism over ‘atom bomb’ remark

The letter highlights Rahul Gandhi’s controversial statement that he has discovered “an atom bomb” that could expose the EC, claiming that “when it explodes, the EC would have no place to hide”.

The group condemned this as an attempt to intimidate constitutional officers performing their duties.

Who signed the letter?

The document includes signatures from:

  • 16 former judges
  • 123 retired bureaucrats
  • 133 veterans from the armed forces

They argue that such rhetoric from a senior political leader and the Leader of the Opposition signals “frustration arising from repeated electoral failure”.

Political reactions expected

The Congress has not yet formally responded to the letter, but party insiders suggest that Rahul Gandhi’s criticisms stem from concerns about transparency in the electoral process. Political observers expect the controversy to intensify ahead of upcoming state elections.
