Saalumarada Thimmakka Passes Away at 114
Saalumarada Thimmakka, a celebrated Indian environmentalist fondly known as the “Mother of Trees,” has died at the age of 114.
Born on 30 June 1911 in Gubbi taluk, Karnataka, Thimmakka dedicated her life to planting and caring for hundreds of banyan trees along rural roadsides. Over many decades, she and her husband lovingly nurtured more than 380 banyan saplings, treating them as her own children.
Despite having no formal education and facing personal hardships, Thimmakka’s unwavering compassion and hard work won her national recognition. She was honored with the Padma Shri in 2019, among other awards.
News of her passing prompted an outpouring of grief. Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah expressed deep sorrow, highlighting Thimmakka’s lifelong commitment to the environment and her lasting impact on the region.
Thimmakka’s legacy lives on in the rows of trees she planted — a green corridor that stands as a symbol of hope, resilience, and the power of individual action in environmental conservation.
