Siddaramaiah Criticizes Centre for Overlooking Kannada, Urges Protection of State Language on Rajyotsava Day
Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Saturday raised strong objections against the Union government, accusing it of sidelining Kannada while promoting Hindi, during his address at the Karnataka Rajyotsava celebrations in Bengaluru. He called for unity among Kannadigas to resist what he described as “anti-Kannada forces.”
“The Centre continues to treat Karnataka unfairly,” Siddaramaiah said, highlighting the state’s significant economic contribution of around ₹4.5 lakh crore in revenue to the national exchequer, while receiving only a small share in return.
The chief minister also criticized the government for prioritizing Hindi and Sanskrit, while other regional languages, including Kannada, are allegedly neglected. “Kannada, despite being a classical language, is not receiving the support it deserves. Continuous attempts are being made to impose Hindi,” he added.
Siddaramaiah stressed the importance of mother-tongue education, pointing out that neglecting Kannada in schools is weakening the state’s younger generation. “Children in other countries learn and think in their native language. Here, overemphasis on English and Hindi is harming the natural development of our children,” he said.
Urging legislative action, the CM suggested laws should be enacted to make Kannada the primary medium of instruction in schools. He called on the Centre to take the state’s demands seriously and provide adequate support for the growth and promotion of the language.
