Soumya Swaminathan and MS Swaminathan Make History as India’s First Father-Daughter Royal Society Fellows

India has achieved a remarkable milestone in the world of science as renowned public health expert Soumya Swaminathan and her father, celebrated agricultural scientist M. S. Swaminathan, became the country’s first father-daughter duo to be awarded the Fellowship of the prestigious Royal Society.

The Fellowship of the Royal Society is regarded as one of the highest honors in global scientific achievement. Founded in the United Kingdom in the 1660s, the Royal Society recognizes individuals who have made exceptional contributions to science, medicine, technology, and research.

M.S. Swaminathan, widely known as the “Father of India’s Green Revolution,” played a transformative role in improving India’s food security through agricultural innovation and scientific farming methods. His contributions helped India overcome severe food shortages during the 1960s and laid the foundation for modern agricultural development in the country.

His daughter, Soumya Swaminathan, has earned international recognition for her work in global health, infectious diseases, and medical research. She previously served as the Chief Scientist at the World Health Organization (WHO) and became one of the leading scientific voices during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The recognition of both father and daughter by the Royal Society is being seen as a historic achievement for Indian science. Experts and academicians across the country have praised the honor, calling it a symbol of India’s growing influence in global scientific research and innovation.

The achievement also highlights the legacy of scientific excellence carried across generations, inspiring young researchers, doctors, and innovators throughout India and beyond.
