Trump Seeks Way to Keep U.S. Food Aid Flowing as Shutdown Threatens Millions

Washington, D.C., October 31, 2025: U.S. President Donald Trump said on Friday that his administration is exploring ways to ensure continued funding for federal food assistance programs as the government shutdown drags into its second month.

The president’s comments come amid growing concern that around 42 million Americans could lose access to food benefits under the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) once current funding runs out on November 1.

In a statement shared on Truth Social, Trump acknowledged that government lawyers had warned of limited legal authority to extend payments during the shutdown. However, he said he has directed officials to “find a lawful path” to keep the program running, stressing that “no American should go hungry because of political gridlock.”

The federal shutdown, triggered by a budget stalemate between Republicans and Democrats, has already left hundreds of thousands of government employees without pay and disrupted essential services nationwide.

Economists warn that losing access to food aid would deepen hardship for low-income families and further strain local food banks already struggling to meet demand.

While the administration has not yet announced a formal solution, officials are expected to issue guidance soon on how critical social programs might continue operating during the funding lapse.
