‘Vande Mataram’ Singing Made Mandatory in All UP Educational Institutions, Announces CM Yogi Adityanath

Addressing participants during the ‘Ekta Yatra’ (Unity March) in Gorakhpur, the Chief Minister emphasized that this initiative aims to deepen patriotic values and foster emotional unity among the youth.

“Singing Vande Mataram will not only honor Bharat Mata but will also awaken a sense of reverence and national pride among citizens,” CM Adityanath said.

The Chief Minister described the move as a step toward connecting young generations with the nation’s cultural heritage and identity. He added that the national song reflects India’s civilizational spirit and the devotion of its people toward the motherland.

Educational authorities are expected to issue detailed guidelines soon for implementation across government, aided, and private institutions. The measure is likely to be incorporated into daily school assemblies and special events, similar to the national anthem tradition.

The announcement comes amid broader state initiatives to promote national unity, cultural awareness, and civic responsibility among students.

Local education departments are also likely to coordinate awareness programs explaining the historical and cultural significance of Vande Mataram, originally composed by Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay during India’s freedom movement.

Background:

Vande Mataram, meaning “I bow to thee, Mother,” was first included in Bankim Chandra’s 1882 novel Anandamath and later became a rallying cry for freedom fighters during India’s independence struggle. It continues to hold a revered place as India’s national song.

The UP government’s decision is expected to draw responses from educators, cultural bodies, and student organizations across the state as discussions around its implementation take shape.
