Who Is Alexis Black? Trans Individual at Center of Gold’s Gym Confrontation With Singer Tish Hyman
Los Angeles, November 6: A viral confrontation at a Gold’s Gym location in California between singer Tish Hyman and a transgender individual identified as Alexis Black has sparked intense discussion online over gender identity, locker room access, and gym policies. The incident, which took place at the gym’s Beverly Center branch, eventually led to Hyman’s membership being terminated.
What Happened at Gold’s Gym
Tish Hyman — known for tracks such as “Subway Art” and “Home for Christmas” — shared a video online where she expressed frustration over what she described as “grown men with male genitalia in the women’s locker room.”
The 42-year-old singer claimed that she had repeatedly encountered trans individuals in the women’s area, alleging that some had been “rude” or “verbally aggressive” toward her.
“Today, one followed me into the women’s room, called me a bitch, and I ran out crying. This is why we can’t stay silent,” Hyman wrote in a social media post.
She added that her gym membership was revoked following the confrontation.
“#GoldsGym terminated my membership after the man was escorted out by police — then had me escorted out too. It was embarrassing,” she wrote.
While the incident occurred when the facility was still operating under Gold’s Gym, ownership of that location has since transferred to EoS Fitness, which recently acquired several Gold’s Gym branches across Southern California.
Who Is Alexis Black?
According to reports from TMZ and Daily Mail, the trans person seen in the clip has been identified as Alexis Black, a fitness coach and somatic healer originally from Ohio. Black previously went by the name Grant Freeman and publicly came out as transgender in October 2024.
On Instagram, Black describes the transition journey as a process of rediscovery:
“For me, being trans isn’t about becoming — it’s about remembering. I didn’t just get a new body or mindset; I got myself back,” reads one of her posts, noting that she began hormone replacement therapy (HRT) in February 2025.
Alexis Black Responds to Allegations
In an appearance on TMZ Live, Black disputed Hyman’s version of events, saying the situation was “misrepresented.”
“I had a towel around me the whole time. I didn’t expose myself or act inappropriately,” Black stated.
She also claimed that this was not the first time she had faced hostility from the singer.
“Tish has created a hostile environment for trans members. I feel like this had to happen for people to understand — you can’t mix trans men with trans women,” she said.
Meanwhile, Hyman maintained that she felt unsafe and that her rights were violated. On X (formerly Twitter), she alleged that Black “demanded” she leave the women’s area, adding:
“This person told me HE was a woman and said straight women are probably looking at him more than me.”
Social Media Reactions
The incident quickly gained traction online, drawing polarized opinions. Singer Boy George briefly commented on the viral post — before later deleting his response — while former college swimmer and activist Riley Gaines praised Hyman for speaking out.
“If we’d seen boldness like this back in 2020, this insanity wouldn’t have been allowed to grow,” Gaines wrote.
The altercation has reignited the broader debate over trans inclusion in gendered spaces and gym policies that seek to balance inclusivity with privacy concerns.
