Zohran Mamdani Urges Starbucks Boycott in Solidarity With Striking Baristas

New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Kwame Mamdani has called on the public to boycott Starbucks in solidarity with over 1,000 unionized baristas striking for a fair contract.

On social media platform X, Mamdani denounced what he called “Unfair Labor Practices” by Starbucks management and urged his followers to join him in the boycott. “While workers are on strike, I won’t be buying any Starbucks, and I’m asking you to join us,” he wrote. “Together, we can send a powerful message: No contract, no coffee.” The strike, which began on Starbucks’ high-traffic “Red Cup Day,” is being led by Starbucks Workers United and spans more than 40 U.S. cities. The union claims that the company has stalled on negotiations and is engaging in anti-union tactics, demanding better pay, more predictable scheduling, and stronger protections.

Mamdani’s intervention marks a significant political backing for the labor movement. As a self-described democratic socialist and long-time labor ally, he is using his growing platform to lift workers’ concerns even before assuming office.

Some critics, however, have pushed back — noting that only a fraction of Starbucks stores are unionized, and questioning the broader impact of a consumer boycott.
