“My Baby and I Won This Together”: Pregnant Delhi Police Constable Sonika Yadav Bags Bronze in Weightlifting
In a remarkable display of strength and determination, Delhi Police constable Sonika Yadav, seven months pregnant, claimed the bronze medal at the All India Police Weightlifting Cluster 2025-26. The event took place in Andhra Pradesh on October 17, where Sonika lifted a total of 145 kg, defying expectations and inspiring countless onlookers.
For the 30-year-old athlete, the achievement was more than a competition—it was a personal triumph. “This wasn’t just any lift,” Sonika shared. “I was preparing for the tournament, and when I discovered I was pregnant in May, I wondered if I could still go through with it. But something inside me said this was meant to be. I returned to training with modified techniques, a supportive belt, and the guidance of my doctors. Competing in the 84+ kg category instead of my usual 69 kg, I ended up winning bronze. It felt incredible.”
Sonika was careful to prioritize her baby’s safety throughout her preparation. “My main concern was never putting my child at risk. I kept asking myself, ‘Am I ready to compete, and is my baby ready too?’ Only when my gynecologist confirmed that both of us were healthy enough to participate did I step on the platform.”
Her feat not only celebrates her athletic skill but also sends a powerful message about perseverance and maternal strength. Sonika’s victory is being hailed as a milestone in Indian sports, showing that determination and careful planning can push boundaries, even under extraordinary circumstances.
