Cyclone ‘Senyar’ May Form Over Bay of Bengal; IMD Issues Heavy Rain Alert for Andaman & Nicobar Islands

Cyclone ‘Senyar’ May Form Over Bay of Bengal; IMD Issues Heavy Rain Alert for Andaman & Nicobar Islands

Officials said the system is expected to intensify from November 21, with the possibility of further strengthening as it moves across the region. Heavy to very heavy rainfall between 7 and 20 cm is likely in parts of Nicobar, while heavy rain is expected over Andaman Islands, accompanied by thunderstorms, gusty winds and lightning.

The IMD noted that wind speeds may reach 40–50 kmph over the islands on November 24 and 25, while the Andaman Sea could witness squally conditions with surface winds gusting up to 55 kmph.

Possible Cyclone ‘Senyar’: What the Name Means

If the circulation intensifies into a cyclonic storm, it will be named ‘Senyar’—a term meaning lion, submitted by the United Arab Emirates under the WMO–ESCAP naming system. ‘Senyar’ is next in line on the North Indian Ocean cyclone roster, following previous storms including Cyclone Montha.

However, the IMD has not yet confirmed whether the current system is likely to develop into a full-fledged cyclone.

Sea Conditions Worsen; Fishermen Warned

With rapidly deteriorating sea conditions, authorities have advised fishermen not to venture into the Andaman Sea until November 23. Port Blair Port has hoisted Local Cautionary Signal-3, signalling high-risk conditions for small vessels.

Tourists, boat operators and local islanders have also been urged to exercise caution amid the likelihood of surging waves and shifting sea currents. Recreational activities, including coastal boating and beach visits, have been advised to proceed only with extreme care.

A senior official from the Directorate of Shipping Services (DSS) indicated that inter-island ferry schedules may face disruptions. “We may be forced to suspend or cancel inter-island and mainland services at short notice. Passenger safety remains our top priority,” the official said.

Authorities on High Alert

As the weather system evolves, ground teams and disaster management units are monitoring the situation closely. The Andaman administration has urged residents to follow official advisories and remain updated on IMD bulletins in the coming days.

The next 48 hours are expected to be crucial in determining whether the system matures into Cyclone Senyar or dissipates without further formation.
