Delhi-NCR Braces for Intense Heatwave as Temperatures Likely to Touch 45°C
Delhi-NCR is expected to face severe heatwave conditions this week, with temperatures likely to cross 45°C as IMD issues warnings for extreme heat across North India.
Delhi-NCR and several parts of North India are expected to experience severe heatwave conditions this week, with temperatures likely to cross the 45°C mark in some areas, according to weather officials.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued warnings for extreme daytime heat across Delhi, Ghaziabad, Noida, Gurugram, and surrounding regions as hot dry winds continue to sweep through the plains of northern India. Meteorologists say the ongoing rise in temperature is being driven by clear skies, dry weather conditions, and strong western heat currents.
On Thursday, several parts of the National Capital Region recorded temperatures significantly above seasonal averages, while humidity levels remained low. Authorities have advised residents to avoid unnecessary outdoor exposure during afternoon hours, especially between 12 PM and 4 PM.
Health experts warned that prolonged exposure to extreme heat can increase the risk of dehydration, heat exhaustion, and heatstroke, particularly among children, elderly citizens, and outdoor workers. Hospitals in the region have also issued advisories urging people to stay hydrated and avoid direct sunlight whenever possible.
The IMD has also indicated chances of isolated dust storms and brief thunderstorms in some areas later this week, although these are unlikely to bring any major relief from the prevailing heatwave conditions.
Power demand across Delhi-NCR has reportedly surged due to increased use of air conditioners and cooling appliances, putting additional pressure on electricity infrastructure during peak hours.
Environmental experts say recurring extreme heat events are becoming more frequent due to climate variability and rising urban temperatures. Concerns have also grown over deteriorating air quality levels in several NCR cities as heat and dust combine to worsen pollution conditions.
Officials continue to monitor the weather situation closely, while disaster management teams remain on alert in case conditions intensify further over the coming days.
