Storm Alerts Issued Across Delhi and North India as Rain and Strong Winds Bring Sudden Weather Shift
Delhi and several parts of North India are under thunderstorm and rain alerts as strong winds and changing weather patterns bring relief from intense summer heat. Authorities have warned of possible disruptions due to lightning, dust storms and sudden showers.
Large parts of Delhi and northern India are bracing for thunderstorms, gusty winds and scattered rainfall after weather authorities issued fresh alerts warning of unstable atmospheric conditions across the region.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said changing wind patterns and moisture movement from nearby regions are likely to trigger thunderstorms over Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Punjab and parts of Rajasthan during the next 24 hours. Officials warned that strong winds, lightning and sudden rain showers could disrupt normal life in several cities.
The forecast marks a sharp contrast to the intense heatwave conditions experienced across North India earlier this month, when temperatures in several areas crossed 45 degrees Celsius. Residents in Delhi woke up to cloudy skies and cooler winds on Wednesday, raising hopes of temporary relief from the prolonged summer heat.
Meteorologists said wind speeds during thunderstorms could reach between 40 and 60 kilometres per hour in some areas. Authorities have advised people to avoid open spaces during lightning activity and urged local administrations to remain prepared for possible disruptions to traffic and power supply.
In the national capital, commuters experienced humid weather through the morning hours as dark clouds gathered across parts of the city. Officials said intermittent rainfall and dust storms remain possible through the evening, particularly in outer districts of Delhi and neighbouring NCR regions.
Several northern states have already witnessed isolated pre-monsoon showers over recent days. Experts say the changing weather pattern may indicate the gradual transition toward the monsoon season, although widespread monsoon rainfall is still expected to take time to fully advance across northern India.
The sudden weather change also raised concerns among farmers and small businesses dependent on stable summer conditions. Agricultural experts warned that strong winds and unseasonal rain could affect standing crops, fruit orchards and local transport networks in rural areas.
Meanwhile, health authorities advised residents to remain cautious as fluctuating temperatures and rising humidity can increase the risk of seasonal illness, dehydration and respiratory discomfort. Hospitals in Delhi have already reported a rise in weather-related health complaints over the past week.
Weather analysts noted that climate variability has made seasonal patterns increasingly unpredictable in India, with many regions witnessing abrupt transitions between extreme heat, storms and heavy rainfall. Scientists have repeatedly warned that climate change could intensify the frequency of such weather events in the future.
Despite the warnings, many residents welcomed the possibility of rain after days of scorching temperatures. Parks and public spaces in parts of Delhi saw increased evening crowds as cooler winds spread across the city ahead of the expected showers.
Officials said weather conditions would continue to be monitored closely, and further advisories may be issued if storm activity intensifies across North India in the coming days.
