IMD Warns of Gusty Winds, Thunderstorms and Rain Across Delhi-NCR

Delhi and nearby NCR regions are likely to experience a noticeable shift in weather over the next few days, as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted thunderstorms, gusty winds and scattered rainfall across the capital and surrounding areas.

According to the IMD, wind speeds may reach between 40 and 50 kilometres per hour, especially during evening and nighttime hours. Certain parts of the region could also witness dust storms and lightning due to the impact of western disturbances affecting weather systems across northern India.

The forecast comes amid ongoing heatwave-like conditions in Delhi, where temperatures in several areas recently climbed above 43°C, making it one of the hottest spells of the season. Officials believe the expected rain and strong winds could provide short-term relief from the extreme heat.

A yellow alert has been issued for parts of Delhi-NCR, with authorities urging residents to remain cautious during periods of severe weather. Strong winds may disrupt traffic movement, damage temporary structures and affect electricity supply in isolated areas if conditions worsen.

Cities adjoining Delhi — including Noida, Ghaziabad, Gurugram and Faridabad — are also expected to witness similar weather activity. Experts say increasing moisture levels and unstable atmospheric conditions are creating favourable conditions for brief rain showers, thunderstorms and dusty winds.

Residents have been advised to avoid unnecessary outdoor movement during storm activity, stay away from weak structures, trees and electric poles, and remain hydrated as daytime temperatures are expected to stay high.

Meteorologists further warned that while the approaching weather system may bring temporary comfort, temperatures could rise again later in the week once the storm activity subsides.
