Domestic Worker Arrested After Killing Pet Dog Inside Apartment Lift in Bengaluru
Bengaluru, November 4 — In a shocking incident captured on CCTV, a domestic worker at an apartment complex in the Bagaluru area of Bengaluru allegedly killed her employer’s pet dog inside the building’s lift. The house-help, identified as Pushpalatha (29) from Tamil Nadu, has since been arrested by police.
The Incident
On October 31, the family’s two pet dogs were taken out for a walk by Pushpalatha, who had been employed for about a month and a half, with a monthly salary of around ₹23,000 and on-site accommodation. CCTV footage reportedly shows the accused entering the lift with one dog — named “Goofy” in some reports — violently swinging or throwing the animal against the lift wall or floor, following which the dog died.
Discovery & Legal Action
The pet’s owner, Rashi Poojari, became suspicious when the caretaker claimed the dog had met with an accident. On reviewing CCTV footage, she discovered the violent act and filed a complaint at the Bagaluru Police Station. An FIR has been registered under Section 325 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (intentional harm or killing of animals) as well as under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act 1960.
Initially, the accused went absconding, but was later arrested according to police records.
Motive & Broader Implications
Investigations revealed that the caretaker cited frustration because the dog allegedly barked at her — though authorities are also probing potential theft and retaliation motives. This case has sparked outrage among residents, animal-rights advocates and pet-owners, who are raising questions about training, vetting and monitoring of domestic workers assigned pet-care duties.
What Happens Now
Under Section 325 BNS, the accused could face up to five years’ imprisonment and a fine if convicted. Police continue to gather evidence, review CCTV footage and interview the apartment staff and residents.
