Hurricane Melissa Strikes Cuba: Hundreds of Thousands Evacuated

Evacuations and Safety Measures

Authorities in eastern Cuba have evacuated tens of thousands of residents as Hurricane Melissa, with winds reaching 120 mph, approaches the island. Power has been shut down across most of the region, and residents in vulnerable areas, including the provincial capital Santiago, were advised to shelter in place. Santiago, home to 400,000 people, is bracing for severe flooding and strong winds.

Flooding and Impact

Local media videos show brown floodwaters rushing through streets at the base of the Sierra Maestra mountains. Early reports indicate widespread flooding from Santiago to Guantánamo, with roughly 35% of the population evacuated in the most affected zones.

Cuba’s Existing Challenges

The storm hits at a difficult time for Cuba, already facing food, fuel, electricity, and medicine shortages. These challenges have contributed to record levels of migration from the island since 2021.

Government Response

President Miguel Diaz-Canel announced that 2,500 electric line workers have been mobilized to restore power and infrastructure immediately after the storm passes. Despite the severity in eastern regions, Havana is expected to remain largely unaffected by the hurricane.

Jamaica Declares Disaster Area

Neighboring Jamaica has also declared a disaster area in preparation for potential impacts from the hurricane, ensuring emergency services and resources are ready for affected communities.
