Indian Student’s Body Recovered from River in Russia, Family Urges Government for Urgent Repatriation
New Delhi / Moscow, November 8, 2025 —
The body of a 22-year-old Indian student who was reportedly missing in Russia has been recovered from a river, local media reports said on Saturday. The student’s family has appealed to the Indian government to help bring his body home at the earliest.
According to the student’s uncle, Russian authorities have sent the body for post-mortem examination before starting the repatriation process, which could take up to two days. “We were informed by officials that the formalities may take some time. We are requesting the Indian government to intervene and expedite the process so that the body can be brought back soon,” he said.
The deceased student, whose name is being withheld pending official confirmation, was pursuing higher education in Russia. He was reported missing earlier this week, prompting a search operation by local police and emergency services.
Investigation Underway
Russian officials have initiated an investigation to determine the cause of death. Preliminary reports suggest no signs of foul play, but authorities are awaiting the final post-mortem report for confirmation.
The Indian Embassy in Moscow has reportedly been in touch with local authorities as well as the student’s family in India. Embassy officials have assured that all necessary consular assistance will be provided to ensure a smooth repatriation process.
Family’s Appeal
The student’s family, based in India, expressed deep grief and urged both Indian and Russian authorities to fast-track the process. “We just want our child’s body to return home soon. Every hour feels like a year,” a family member said, struggling to hold back tears.
The family has also reached out to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) and local Members of Parliament seeking intervention.
