Iran Arrives for Conditional Negotiations with US in Pakistan

The negotiations come days after a fragile ceasefire was agreed following weeks of conflict that has raised fears of a wider regional war. Senior Iranian figures, including parliamentary and diplomatic leaders, are expected to take part in the discussions, while the US delegation is led by Vice President JD Vance.

Iran has said it will only fully engage in talks if certain conditions are met, including a ceasefire in Lebanon and the release of its frozen financial assets. US officials, however, have expressed caution, indicating that some of Tehran’s demands may fall outside the scope of the current negotiations.

The talks are seen as a critical moment in diplomacy, with analysts warning that failure could lead to renewed escalation. Fighting linked to the broader conflict, particularly involving Israel and armed groups in Lebanon, has already caused significant casualties and humanitarian concerns.

Key issues expected to dominate the discussions include Iran’s nuclear programme, regional security, and control of strategic waterways such as the Strait of Hormuz, a vital route for global energy supplies.

Officials in Pakistan, which is hosting the talks, have described the meeting as a “make or break” opportunity to reduce tensions and push towards a longer-term agreement.

Despite cautious optimism, deep mistrust between the two sides remains, raising questions over whether diplomacy can succeed in ending one of the most serious geopolitical crises in recent years.
