Maharashtra EC Probes Claim That Woman NCP Candidate Was Prevented From Filing Nomination in Solapur
State Election Commissioner Dinesh Waghmare says the matter will be examined after allegations of obstruction by anti-social elements surface.
The Maharashtra Election Commission has launched a preliminary inquiry into allegations that a woman candidate contesting a Nagar Panchayat election in Solapur district was obstructed by anti-social elements from filing her nomination papers for two consecutive days.
The candidate, a farmer backed by Ajit Pawar’s Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), reportedly faced intimidation and deliberate attempts to prevent her from reaching the designated nomination center. The allegations have sparked concerns over electoral fairness, especially in smaller civic bodies where local influence and pressure often collide with democratic processes.
Speaking to the media on Sunday, State Election Commissioner Dinesh Waghmare acknowledged the seriousness of the complaint, stating, “We will look into the matter.” He assured that the Commission would verify the facts, review available evidence, and ensure that no candidate is denied their constitutional right to contest an election.
Sources in Solapur suggest that the candidate had attempted to submit her nomination twice but was allegedly blocked by groups described as “anti-social elements.” Local police are expected to assist the Commission in reviewing CCTV footage, witness accounts, and movement logs around the nomination office.
The incident has triggered strong political reactions, with NCP functionaries accusing rivals of trying to sabotage a democratic process. Party members have demanded strict action and protection for candidates, particularly women, who often face additional hurdles in local body elections.
The Election Commission’s intervention underscores its responsibility to safeguard free and fair elections in Maharashtra’s civic governance system. As the investigation proceeds, all eyes are on whether the candidate will be able to complete her nomination process without further interference.
