Nevada Freezing Fog Advisory: Travelers Warned of Hazardous Road Conditions

Pudvi Times – Weather News Nevada, USA: Nearly 80,000 people in Northern Nevada were warned of dangerous travel conditions on Wednesday morning, November 19, as freezing fog descended across several regions of the state. The National Weather Service (NWS) described the event as rare for this time of year, noting that the lower atmosphere in the region rarely has enough moisture to support freezing fog formation.

Nevada Freezing Fog Advisory: Travelers Warned of Hazardous Road Conditions

Senior meteorologist Bill South of NWS said that visibility was sharply reduced in multiple areas, creating hazardous driving conditions. The advisories, issued by the Reno and Elko NWS offices, will remain in effect until 9 am PST.

Areas Under Advisory

The freezing fog warnings specifically cover:

  • Greater Reno-Carson City-Minden Area
  • Western Nevada Basin and Range, including Pyramid Lake
  • Humboldt County, including Golconda, Dufferna, Valmy, and Winnemucca
  • Additional affected communities: Lovelock, Sparks, Imlay, Virginia City, Silver Springs, Fallon, Gardnerville, Nixon, Fernley, and Verdi

The NWS warned that moisture in the fog could freeze on roads, leading to slick surfaces. Motorists were urged to slow down, use headlights, and maintain a safe distance from other vehicles.

Highway Warnings

The Elko office specifically cautioned residents of Humboldt County:

“Patchy, dense freezing fog will continue across portions of Humboldt County, including roads like I-80, US Highway 95, and SR140. Travel will be difficult; please use caution this morning.”

Northern and Central Nevada are also expected to experience slightly cooler temperatures, 2–4 degrees below normal for this time of year. Valleys and basins, including the Martis and Carson Valleys, have the highest chances of dense fog, with visibility dropping below one mile in some areas.

Even after the advisories expire, residents and travelers are advised to remain alert, as road and weather conditions may continue to change throughout the day.
