Oil Prices Surge Past $105 as Iran War Enters Third Week

Oil prices have surged above $105 per barrel as the conflict involving Iran enters its third week, triggering fresh volatility in global energy markets. Benchmark Brent crude climbed to around $106 while US West Texas Intermediate crude moved above $100, marking the highest levels seen since 2022.

The price jump is largely driven by fears of major supply disruptions in the Middle East. The conflict has threatened vital oil infrastructure and shipping routes, particularly the Strait of Hormuz — a narrow waterway through which roughly one-fifth of the world’s oil supply normally passes. Any disruption in this route can significantly tighten global supply and push prices higher.

Tensions escalated further after military strikes targeted Iran’s key export hub on Kharg Island, raising concerns that oil production and exports from the region could be severely affected. Analysts say the war has already caused one of the biggest disruptions to global oil markets in recent years.

In response to the rapidly rising prices, the International Energy Agency announced plans for a massive release of emergency oil reserves from several countries to stabilize markets and prevent further price spikes. However, energy experts warn that if the conflict continues or spreads to other Gulf states, oil prices could climb even higher, increasing inflation risks and putting pressure on the global economy.

Financial markets around the world are closely watching developments in the region, as prolonged instability could lead to higher fuel costs, increased transportation expenses, and broader economic challenges for both developed and developing countries.
