PM Modi Begins Visit to South Africa for Historic G20 Summit
Johannesburg, South Africa, November 21, 2025 – Prime Minister Narendra Modi has begun a three-day visit to South Africa to attend the first G20 summit hosted in Africa, scheduled from November 21 to 23. The summit marks a milestone as the first G20 meeting held on the African continent.
During his stay in Johannesburg, PM Modi will also participate in the sixth IBSA Summit on the sidelines of the G20. The prime minister will engage with the Indian diaspora, one of the largest communities outside India, reinforcing cultural and economic ties.
Speaking before his departure, Modi said, “I will present India’s perspective at the Summit in line with our vision of ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’ – One Earth, One Family, One Future.”
The G20 brings together major economies accounting for 85% of global GDP and 75% of international trade, focusing this year under South Africa’s presidency on Solidarity, Equality, and Sustainability. This summit is the fourth consecutive G20 meeting hosted by the Global South, following Indonesia (2022), India (2023), and Brazil (2024).
According to Sudhakar Dalela, Secretary (ER) of the Ministry of External Affairs, the G20 serves as a critical platform for consensus-building and launching initiatives that benefit the Global South. “A number of achievements have been made throughout the year across various tracks. Issues of importance to the Global South are being highlighted under South Africa’s presidency,” Dalela said.
Bilateral meetings are also expected to take place on the sidelines of the summit. Dalela emphasized the strong cooperation between India and South Africa, rooted in shared democratic values and a partnership spanning political, economic, and social sectors.
This visit marks PM Modi’s fourth official trip to South Africa, following his bilateral visit in 2016 and participation in BRICS summits in 2018 and 2023.
