Tragedy at Sea: Eleven Dead After Rohingya Migrant Boat Sinks Near Thai-Malaysia Border

BANGKOK, Thailand – At least eleven people have been confirmed dead after a boat carrying Rohingya migrants capsized in rough waters near the Thai-Malaysia maritime border, authorities said on Sunday.

Rescue teams from both countries launched a joint search and recovery mission after the wooden vessel, believed to be carrying around 70 refugees, went down during heavy rain and strong currents late Saturday night.

Local fishermen first spotted debris and survivors clinging to makeshift rafts before alerting authorities. So far, 11 bodies — mostly women and children — have been recovered, while dozens remain missing, feared drowned.

“We are racing against time,” said one Thai naval officer involved in the search. “The seas are still rough, and visibility is poor — but we won’t stop until we find everyone.”

The passengers are believed to be Rohingya Muslims fleeing conflict and persecution in Myanmar’s Rakhine State, in hopes of reaching Malaysia for safety and work opportunities.

Human rights organizations have called the tragedy another reminder of the perilous journeys thousands of Rohingya undertake each year in search of refuge, often falling prey to human traffickers and dangerous sea conditions.

As rescue efforts continue, local authorities have urged coastal communities to stay alert for any survivors who may have drifted ashore.

This latest disaster adds to a growing list of maritime tragedies in Southeast Asia, highlighting the ongoing humanitarian crisis facing one of the world’s most persecuted minorities.
