US to Exempt Select Bangladeshi Garments from Import Tariffs
The United States has announced tariff exemptions on certain apparel products imported from Bangladesh, offering relief to the country’s key garment export sector.
The United States has decided to exempt specific categories of clothing imported from Bangladesh from existing tariffs, a move expected to provide a significant boost to the South Asian nation’s ready-made garment (RMG) industry. Bangladesh is one of the world’s largest apparel exporters, with the US being its single largest export destination.
The tariff relief is likely to lower costs for American retailers and brands while enhancing the competitiveness of Bangladeshi manufacturers in the US market. Industry experts believe the decision could help stabilise export volumes at a time when global demand remains uncertain due to inflationary pressures and shifting consumer spending patterns.
Bangladesh’s garment sector, which employs millions of workers—mostly women—has faced challenges in recent years, including rising production costs and tighter global trade conditions. The exemption is being viewed as a positive step towards strengthening bilateral trade relations between the two countries and supporting sustainable growth in Bangladesh’s apparel industry.
Officials have indicated that the exemptions apply only to selected clothing items and will be reviewed periodically, keeping in mind trade compliance, labour standards, and sourcing transparency.
