Bangladesh Erupts in Violent Unrest After Youth Leader Sharif Osman Hadi’s Death; Media Houses Torched in Dhaka

Dhaka, Bangladesh — Widespread violent protests have engulfed Bangladesh after the death of 32-year-old youth leader Sharif Osman Hadi, sparking unrest across the capital and other cities. Hadi, a prominent figure in the 2024 pro-democracy uprising, succumbed to injuries in a Singapore hospital, where he was receiving treatment after an assassination attempt earlier this month.

Outcry and Demonstrations

As news of Hadi’s death spread late Thursday night, thousands of protesters took to the streets demanding that those responsible be held accountable. Demonstrations quickly turned violent in Dhaka and elsewhere, with students, activists, and members of the public blocking roads, chanting slogans, and confronting security forces.

Attacks on Media Houses

The unrest escalated significantly when major media offices were targeted. Buildings housing Bangladesh’s largest newspapers—The Daily Star and Prothom Alo—were vandalized and set on fire after crowds accusing the outlets of biased reporting surrounded and stormed them. Fire services responded to multiple arson reports in the capital, and journalists and staff were reported trapped inside the burning structures before being rescued.

Videos circulated on social media showed smoke billowing from the offices as staff called for help, underscoring the chaotic and dangerous situation for members of the press.

Broader Violence and Targets

Beyond media houses, protesters attacked other symbols of authority and property. Reports indicated that the residence of a former Member of Parliament was set on fire in Chattogram, and sit-ins occurred near the Indian Assistant High Commission’s residence as chants against foreign influence intensified. Police resorted to tear gas to disperse crowds in some areas.

Hadi had risen to national prominence during the 2024 student uprising that led to the ouster of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. His death comes at a politically sensitive time, with national elections scheduled for February 2026. The interim government, led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus, declared a day of national mourning and vowed a thorough investigation into the killing.

Authorities have increased security deployments in major cities, but the situation remains volatile as demonstrations continue and calls for justice grow louder.
