Rahul Gandhi Targets PM Modi Over India-US Trade Talks, Questions Government’s Negotiating Stand

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has launched a fresh attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the ongoing India-US trade negotiations, accusing the government of compromising India’s economic interests during discussions with Washington.

Speaking at a public event and later reiterating his remarks on social media, Rahul Gandhi questioned the Centre’s handling of trade and tariff-related issues with the United States. He alleged that the government was under pressure to make concessions that could negatively impact Indian farmers, small businesses, and domestic industries.

The Congress leader used the term “compromised PM” while criticizing the government’s approach, triggering sharp political reactions from the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). BJP leaders dismissed the remarks as politically motivated and defended the government’s foreign and economic policies, saying India continues to negotiate from a position of strength.

The India-US trade discussions have gained momentum in recent months as both countries seek to deepen economic cooperation in sectors including technology, manufacturing, digital trade, pharmaceuticals, clean energy, and defence. Officials from both sides are reportedly working toward resolving pending tariff disputes and improving market access.

Government sources have maintained that India’s interests remain the top priority in all negotiations and that trade talks are focused on creating balanced opportunities for businesses and investors in both countries.

Political analysts believe Rahul Gandhi’s remarks reflect the opposition’s broader strategy to challenge the government on economic issues ahead of upcoming elections. The Congress party has repeatedly accused the Centre of favouring large corporations while neglecting the concerns of farmers and small enterprises.

Meanwhile, trade experts note that India-US economic ties have expanded significantly over the past decade, with bilateral trade crossing record levels. However, negotiations on tariffs, agricultural imports, data regulations, and market access continue to remain sensitive areas between the two nations.

The latest exchange has once again intensified the political debate surrounding India’s foreign policy and economic diplomacy.
