Sun Releases the Largest Solar Radiation Storm in Over 20 Years, Forecasters Say

Powerful solar activity from the Sun has triggered what scientists are calling the largest solar radiation storm in more than 20 years, according to the U.S. National Weather Service’s Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC). The event, an S4 severe storm on a five-level scale, was confirmed in a post by SWPC, noting that similar storm conditions were last seen in October 2003 during intense space weather events.

Charged particles from this solar storm are currently streaming toward Earth, and while such space weather does not directly harm people on the ground, it can disrupt satellite communications, GPS accuracy and aviation systems, particularly on polar routes. The last storms of this strength have previously caused effects ranging from satellite wear to power grid challenges, making close monitoring critical.

In addition to technological impacts, forecasters highlight that the solar storm could produce spectacular auroral displays (Northern Lights) at much lower latitudes than usual, offering observers in regions well south of the Arctic Circle a rare chance to see them.  Scientists and agencies worldwide are tracking the situation to provide updates and advisories as conditions evolve.
