The Centre on Tuesday defended its stance on the Aravalli hill range, amid criticism from opposition parties and environmental groups accusing the government of weakening protections for the ecologically sensitive region.
Officials clarified that there is no dilution of environmental safeguards, stressing that the move is aimed at clarifying regulatory ambiguities rather than opening the hills to unchecked commercial exploitation.
The statement comes after allegations that recent policy adjustments and changes in land-use classification could pave the way for mining and construction activities across the Aravallis, which span Rajasthan, Haryana, Delhi, and Gujarat.
A senior government source said, “Existing laws on forests, wildlife, and environmental clearances continue to apply. Any development in the Aravallis will be subject to strict scrutiny.”
Opposition leaders, however, accused the government of prioritizing economic interests over ecological concerns, with some warning that easing restrictions could exacerbate air pollution, groundwater depletion, and biodiversity loss in northern India.
Environmentalists have also expressed concern, demanding stronger statutory safeguards to prevent degradation of one of the country’s oldest hill ranges.
The controversy highlights growing political and environmental debate as the government seeks to balance developmental priorities with conservation obligations ahead of upcoming state elections in regions affected by the Aravalli ecosystem.
