Heatwave Tightens Grip on New Delhi as Temperatures Cross 40°C; India Meteorological Department Predicts Brief Weather Relief
New Delhi is witnessing a sharp rise in temperatures as the mercury crossed the 40°C mark, marking one of the hottest days of the season so far. The sudden spike has pushed the city into early heatwave-like conditions, accompanied by hazy skies and rising discomfort levels.
According to the India Meteorological Department, the maximum temperature in the national capital settled around 40–41°C, which is significantly above the seasonal average. Weather experts attribute the rise to dry northwesterly winds and clear skies that are accelerating heat buildup across the region.
The hazy conditions observed across Delhi-NCR are also being linked to dust accumulation and moderate air pollution levels, further impacting visibility and air quality. Residents have reported increased discomfort due to the combination of heat and humidity.
Despite the intense conditions, the IMD has indicated a possibility of temporary relief in the coming days. Light rain, thunderstorms, or partly cloudy skies could bring down temperatures slightly, especially during evening hours. However, this relief is expected to be short-lived.
Authorities have advised citizens to take precautions, including staying hydrated, avoiding outdoor activities during peak afternoon hours, and taking measures to prevent heat-related illnesses.
Meteorologists warn that this early surge in temperatures could signal a prolonged and intense summer ahead, with heatwave conditions likely to become more frequent in the coming weeks.
