Kiran Bedi Appeals to PM Modi as Delhi Air Pollution Hits 'Very Poor' Levels

Former police officer and Puducherry Lieutenant Governor Kiran Bedi has appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to intervene as Delhi grapples with worsening air quality. On Friday, several areas in the capital recorded an Air Quality Index (AQI) of 369, placing it in the ‘very poor’ category.

Taking to X, Bedi referenced PM Modi’s “effective” Zoom sessions during her tenure in Puducherry and urged him to hold monthly virtual meetings with Chief Ministers and Chief Secretaries of Delhi’s neighbouring states. She emphasized that such oversight could inspire timely action and accountability in combating pollution.

“Sir please forgive me for pleading again. But I have seen your very effective Zoom sessions during my time in Puducherry… How everyone was inspired to meet deadlines and goals,” Bedi wrote, urging the Prime Minister to also raise air pollution awareness during his Mann Ki Baat address. She suggested that addressing the issue publicly would help citizens understand how they can contribute to pollution control.

Bedi highlighted that Delhi’s air quality challenges are not accidental, but a result of “decades without true coordination in governance.” She called for cooperative practices among states and officials to mitigate the crisis.

Despite ongoing anti-pollution measures, the AQI in Delhi has remained between 'very poor' and 'severe' levels for the past two weeks. Forecasts indicate that the air quality is likely to stay 'very poor' over the coming week, signaling a continued need for urgent action.
