‘Once in 300 Years’ Rain Drowns Thai City as Floods Wreck Southeast Asia

Thailand is grappling with devastating floods after record-breaking rainfall hit its southern provinces, killing at least 18 people and forcing authorities to deploy military ships and helicopters for rescue operations. The city of Hat Yai, a bustling commercial hub near the Malaysia border, recorded 335mm of rain in a single day — the heaviest downpour in 300 years.
Scenes of submerged houses and vehicles have emerged across the city, with residents stranded on rooftops awaiting rescue. The relentless rainfall has left communities isolated and caused widespread disruption to daily life.
The extreme weather has not been limited to Thailand. Vietnam has reported 98 fatalities in just one week, while Malaysia has evacuated over 19,000 people from flood-affected areas. Governments across the region are struggling to provide relief and manage the humanitarian crisis as heavy rains continue.
Meteorologists warn that climate change and shifting weather patterns are increasing the frequency of such unprecedented storms, leaving millions vulnerable in Southeast Asia.
