Sudan Drone Strike on Hospital During Eid Kills 64, Says WHO

A deadly drone strike on a key hospital in Sudan’s Darfur region during Eid celebrations has killed at least 64 people, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). The attack targeted the Al-Daein Teaching Hospital in East Darfur, killing patients, medical staff, and civilians, including at least 13 children, and injuring dozens more.

The WHO confirmed that the strike severely damaged the hospital, making the facility non-functional and cutting off critical medical services for the region. The attack took place amid Sudan’s ongoing civil war between the Sudanese military and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces, which began in 2023 and has caused tens of thousands of deaths and a massive humanitarian crisis.

Both sides in the conflict blamed each other for the attack, with the military denying responsibility while opposition groups accused government forces of carrying out the drone strike. The WHO and international organizations have condemned the attack, calling for the protection of hospitals and civilians in conflict zones.

The strike is part of a growing number of attacks on healthcare facilities in Sudan, where more than 2,000 people have been killed in attacks on medical infrastructure since the war began. The incident has drawn global concern as it occurred during Eid, a major religious festival, making the tragedy even more devastating for families and communities.
