University of Queensland and IIT Delhi Launch Joint Ph.D. Programme, Admissions Begin for July 2026

The initiative aims to promote world-class, cross-disciplinary research by bringing together two globally reputed institutions — one from India and the other from Australia — to offer scholars a truly global academic experience.

A Collaborative Global Research Experience

The UQ–IIT Delhi Joint Ph.D. Programme will allow candidates to pursue research under the supervision of faculty members from both universities, enabling them to benefit from diverse academic expertise, research infrastructure, and collaborative learning opportunities.

Students will spend time at both campuses — IIT Delhi in India and the University of Queensland in Brisbane, Australia — gaining exposure to varied research ecosystems, cultural perspectives, and industry collaborations.

“This partnership strengthens research bridges between India and Australia, opening doors for innovation that addresses global challenges,” said an IIT Delhi spokesperson. “Scholars will not only gain academic depth but also the international exposure necessary for impactful research careers.”

Upon successful completion, candidates will be awarded a joint Ph.D. degree, carrying the academic seal of both UQ and IIT Delhi — a credential recognized internationally.

Focus Areas and Opportunities

The programme is expected to cover a wide range of research disciplines, including:

·         Engineering and Technology

·         Environmental Sciences

·         Health and Biomedical Research

·         Artificial Intelligence and Data Science

·         Energy and Sustainability

·         Social Sciences and Humanities

The collaboration will also focus on developing solutions for global issues such as climate change, digital transformation, sustainable development, and emerging technologies.

Admissions and Eligibility

Expressions of Interest are now open for prospective candidates, with formal applications to be invited in the coming months. The joint selection process will assess applicants based on academic excellence, research potential, and alignment with ongoing projects at both universities.

Selected candidates will have access to dual research supervision, shared facilities, and potential scholarship support, depending on merit and research area.

Strengthening India–Australia Academic Ties

The partnership between IIT Delhi and UQ is part of a growing trend in higher education, where institutions collaborate globally to foster innovation and knowledge exchange.

“By combining our strengths, we aim to train researchers who can think globally and act locally,” said a University of Queensland representative. “Such collaborations prepare scholars to tackle challenges that transcend borders.”

The programme also supports the goals of the Australia–India Education and Research partnership, promoting mutual academic growth and mobility between the two countries.

The Road Ahead

With the first batch beginning in July 2026, the UQ–IIT Delhi Joint Ph.D. Programme is set to create a new benchmark in international doctoral education, offering Indian and global students access to dual mentorship, shared resources, and cross-cultural research opportunities.
