Australian PM Evacuated After Bomb Threat Linked to Chinese-Affiliated Dance Group
Australia’s Prime Minister Anthony Albanese was briefly evacuated from his official residence in Canberra after a bomb threat was emailed in connection with performances by a classical Chinese-affiliated dance and music troupe amid threats over their tour schedule.
Canberra officials evacuated Prime Minister Anthony Albanese from The Lodge, his official residence, on Tuesday evening following a bomb threat tied to upcoming performances by the classical Chinese dance and music ensemble Shen Yun Performing Arts. The New York-based company, which has ties to the spiritual movement Falun Gong and is banned in the People’s Republic of China, is scheduled to tour several Australian cities this month.
Threatening emails written in Chinese were allegedly sent to local organisers demanding that the performances be cancelled. One message claimed that “large quantities of nitroglycerin” had been placed around the prime minister’s residence and warned that it would be detonated if the shows proceeded.
Law enforcement, including the Australian Federal Police, conducted a thorough search of The Lodge but found no explosives or ongoing public danger. Authorities confirmed there is no current threat to community safety and that Albanese was safe after being moved to another secure location for several hours.
The incident has sparked debate on the rising number of threats against public officials and the pressures faced by cultural events, even as organisers maintain that the performances are peaceful artistic showcases and condemn intimidation.
