Cyclone Ditwah Approaches India: Heavy Rainfall Forecast Across Five States
HONG KONG / NEW DELHI, Nov 28 — A new cyclonic storm, Cyclone Ditwah, is brewing over the Bay of Bengal, prompting heavy rainfall warnings across multiple states in India. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast significant rainfall in Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka, Telangana, and Andhra Pradesh, with impacts expected over the next five days.
According to the IMD, as of 27 November 2025, Cyclone Ditwah was centered near latitude 7.9°N and longitude 81.3°E, roughly 480 km south-southeast of Puducherry and 580 km south-southeast of Chennai. The storm, moving northwest at 8 km/h, is projected to pass along the Sri Lanka coast and adjoining southwest Bay of Bengal before approaching the Indian mainland.
IMD Alerts and Forecasts
The IMD has issued warnings for heavy to very heavy rainfall across several districts:
· Tamil Nadu: Kanyakumari, Nagapattinam, Pudukkottai, Ramanathapuram, Thanjavur, Thiruvarur, Thoothukkudi, and Tirunelveli are under orange alert. Sivaganga, Tenkasi, and Virudhunagar are on yellow alert. Isolated extremely heavy rainfall is expected on 28-29 November.
· Kerala: Isolated extremely heavy rainfall is predicted on 30 November, with heavy rain continuing until 29 November.
· Andhra Pradesh & Rayalaseema: Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam may experience isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall until 2 December.
· Telangana: Heavy rainfall is forecast for 30 November-1 December.
· Karnataka: South Interior Karnataka can brace for heavy rain on 29 November, with North Interior areas affected on 30 November.
The IMD has also issued thunderstorm and lightning warnings:
· Tamil Nadu: 27 November – 1 December
· Kerala & Mahe: 27–29 November
· Coastal Andhra Pradesh & Yanam: 28 November – 1 December
· North & South Interior Karnataka: 29–30 November

Residents in affected regions are urged to take precautionary measures, avoid low-lying areas, and follow local authorities’ instructions. Farmers, fishermen, and travelers should remain vigilant as heavy rainfall and strong winds are likely to disrupt daily activities.
