Iran weighs US peace plan as Trump signals possible swift end to war
Iran has confirmed it is reviewing a new US peace proposal aimed at ending the ongoing conflict, while Donald Trump has said a deal could be reached “quickly” if negotiations succeed. The talks, mediated through regional intermediaries, focus on nuclear restrictions, sanctions relief and the strategic Strait of Hormuz. However, major differences remain and Iran has not yet issued a formal response.
Iran is reviewing a new United States peace proposal aimed at ending the ongoing war in the Gulf region, according to Iranian officials and diplomatic sources.
The proposal, delivered through intermediaries including Pakistan, reportedly outlines a framework for a ceasefire, partial sanctions relief and future negotiations on Iran’s nuclear programme. However, key issues such as uranium enrichment limits and access to the Strait of Hormuz remain unresolved.
A spokesperson for Iran’s foreign ministry said Tehran would “convey its response soon”, indicating that discussions are still at an early and sensitive stage.
US President Donald Trump has expressed optimism about the negotiations, suggesting that a deal could be reached quickly if Iran agrees to the terms. Speaking from Washington, he said recent talks had been “very good” and hinted that diplomatic progress was possible.
Despite this, Trump has also warned that failure to reach an agreement could lead to further escalation, reinforcing the uncertainty surrounding the talks.
The proposed agreement is believed to include a phased approach: easing of economic sanctions on Iran in exchange for restrictions on its nuclear activities and guarantees over maritime security in the Strait of Hormuz — one of the world’s most critical oil shipping routes.
However, Iranian lawmakers have reportedly described parts of the proposal as “unrealistic” and heavily tilted in favour of Washington’s demands, particularly on nuclear restrictions and regional military influence.
Global markets reacted cautiously to the news, with oil prices fluctuating amid speculation of a possible de-escalation, though analysts warn that the situation remains highly unstable.
Diplomatic sources say both sides are still exchanging messages through third-party mediators, and no formal breakthrough has yet been achieved.
For now, the situation remains at a delicate stage — with tentative diplomacy underway but significant mistrust continuing to define US-Iran relations.
