Japan Prime Minister Takaichi to Dissolve Parliament Friday and Call National Election
Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi announced she will dissolve the House of Representatives this Friday and call a snap national election for February 8, seeking a public mandate for her agenda on spending, tax cuts, and national security.
Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi said on Monday that she will dissolve the House of Representatives on Friday and call a national election scheduled for February 8, marking her first electoral test since becoming Japan’s first female prime minister in October.
Takaichi is seeking voter backing for her policy agenda, which includes increased public spending, tax cuts such as a proposed two-year suspension of the 8% food consumption tax, and a revised security strategy that could accelerate defence spending amid regional tensions.
The election will decide all 465 seats in the lower house and is expected to test public support on issues like the rising cost of living, where recent polls show inflation remains a top concern. By calling the early poll, Takaichi aims to secure a stronger mandate for her government and solidify her fragile coalition majority in parliament.
Opposition parties have criticised the timing of the snap election, arguing it could delay key budget decisions. Nonetheless, official campaigning is set to begin later this month ahead of the February vote.
