Private Jet Crashes Near Toluca in Central Mexico, Killing at Least 7 People
A small private jet crashed near Toluca International Airport in central Mexico while attempting an emergency landing, killing at least seven people, authorities say. Emergency crews responded, and investigations are underway.
A small private jet crashed in central Mexico while attempting an emergency landing on Monday, killing at least seven people, local officials confirmed. The aircraft, which had departed from Acapulco on the Pacific coast, went down in San Mateo Atenco, an industrial area about three miles from Toluca International Airport, said Mexico State Civil Protection Coordinator Adrián Hernández.
The plane reportedly had eight passengers and two crew members on board, but only seven bodies had been recovered hours after the crash, Hernández said. It is believed the aircraft attempted to land on a nearby soccer field when it struck the metal roof of a business, triggering a large fire that prompted evacuations of around 130 people in the surrounding area.
Local authorities, including firefighters and emergency responders, rushed to the scene following the accident. San Mateo Atenco Mayor Ana Muñiz said the blaze forced nearby residents to move to safety as crews worked to control the fire and search the wreckage.
Investigators have not yet determined the exact cause of the crash, but the aircraft’s attempt to make an emergency landing suggests a mechanical or technical issue may have played a role. The incident remains under official investigation as authorities gather more details.
