Sen. Jim Justice to Pay $5 Million in Back Taxes Following Justice Department Lawsuit
Washington, D.C. — U.S. Senator Jim Justice and his wife, Cathy Justice, have agreed to pay $5 million in back taxes after the Justice Department filed a civil lawsuit alleging years of unpaid income taxes dating back to 2009. The settlement comes shortly after the Department accused the couple of failing to satisfy federal tax obligations despite repeated notices and demands.
The lawsuit, filed Monday, cited an unpaid tax amount of $5,164,739.75, highlighting what the Justice Department described as “neglect or refusal” to pay owed federal taxes. By the end of the day, the couple had agreed to pay the full amount, effectively settling the case.
Justice, a West Virginia Republican and former governor, was sworn into the U.S. Senate in January after winning the seat previously held by Democrat Joe Manchin. The coal-mining heir, once the state’s wealthiest individual, has faced long-standing scrutiny over his companies’ financial troubles, mounting debts, and tax penalties.
Despite public attention to his financial situation, Justice has historically resisted media coverage of his business challenges. In 2021, he told reporters that his companies’ issues “will be worked out.” However, Forbes reported earlier this year that Justice’s debts exceeded $1 billion, with a net worth estimated at less than zero.
The Senator’s office has not yet issued a comment regarding the settlement.
