Sri Lanka Declares Weekly Holiday to Save Fuel Amid Asia’s Energy Crunch
Sri Lanka has announced every Wednesday as a holiday to conserve fuel, as several Asian nations adopt emergency measures to tackle a worsening energy crisis.
Sri Lanka has taken a major step to address its growing fuel shortage by declaring Wednesdays as a weekly holiday, effectively shifting to a four-day working week. The move is aimed at reducing fuel consumption as the country faces an escalating energy crisis linked to global disruptions.
The shortage has been triggered largely by tensions in the Middle East, which have affected key oil supply routes such as the Strait of Hormuz — a critical channel for energy imports across South Asia. As a result, countries heavily dependent on imported fuel are struggling to maintain stable supplies.
In Sri Lanka, the government has extended the policy to state institutions, schools, and universities, while also urging private businesses to follow the same approach. Authorities are additionally promoting work-from-home arrangements and have introduced fuel rationing to stretch limited reserves.
Other Asian countries are also implementing similar measures. Nations like Pakistan and Bangladesh are reducing working hours, shifting to remote work, and enforcing controlled energy usage to cope with rising fuel prices and supply constraints.
The situation highlights the broader regional impact of global geopolitical tensions, with governments racing to conserve resources and prevent deeper economic disruption. For Sri Lanka, still recovering from its past financial crisis, the stakes are particularly high as it tries to avoid another severe energy and economic shock.
