US Amplifies Military Pressure on Iran Ahead of Critical Geneva Nuclear Talks

As preparations intensify for high-level nuclear talks between the United States and Iran in Geneva, Washington has significantly increased its military pressure on Tehran. The US has accelerated the deployment of air and naval assets — including aircraft carriers, fighter jets, refuelling tankers, and extended troop rotations — to the Middle East ahead of the planned negotiations. This strategic buildup aims both to signal resolve and to ensure rapid strike options if diplomacy fails, according to multiple officials familiar with the movements.

The aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln is already in the region, with the USS Gerald R. Ford and additional US Air Force support units reportedly en route. These forces expand Washington’s ability to project air power, enhance air defence, and strike targets across Iran if required. Guided-missile destroyers accompanying the carriers could also launch long-range Tomahawk cruise missiles, providing substantial offensive options.

The buildup comes at a tense moment in US-Iran ties. Tehran has resumed indirect negotiations, while Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps has conducted military drills in the strategic Strait of Hormuz, underscoring its own readiness. Iranian officials have emphasised that military pressure will not deter them from defending what they describe as their sovereign rights.

Analysts say the US deployment serves multiple purposes — from bolstering deterrence and protecting shipping lanes to reinforcing leverage in negotiations focused on Iran’s nuclear programme and its capacity to enrich uranium. However, the expanded military presence also raises the risk of miscalculation at a moment when both sides are seeking to manage diplomatic and strategic tensions.
