Japan Plans Missile Deployment on Island Near Taiwan by 2031

Japan’s government has confirmed plans to deploy medium-range surface-to-air missile systems on Yonaguni Island, its westernmost island located roughly 110 km east of Taiwan, by the fiscal year ending in March 2031. The move, announced by Defence Minister Shinjiro Koizumi, marks the first time Tokyo has given a timeline for the deployment, which was initially unveiled in 2022 as part of efforts to strengthen Japan’s air defence capabilities in the face of growing regional security challenges.

The deployment forms part of Japan’s broader strategy to enhance its military posture in its southwestern islands in response to increasing military activities by China near the Taiwan Strait. China claims Taiwan as its own territory and has shown opposition to Japan’s defence build-up close to the self-governing island, leading to diplomatic tensions between Tokyo and Beijing. Japan has sought to frame the missile placement as a defensive measure designed to deter potential threats and reduce the likelihood of attacks on Japanese territory.

Local briefings for residents of Yonaguni are planned as part of the preparations, and the decision reflects Japan’s evolving security policy amid geopolitical shifts in the Indo-Pacific region.
