US Escalates Gulf Tensions with Fresh Airstrikes on Iranian Missile Bases and Naval Boats

Fresh US military strikes on Iranian targets in southern Iran have sharply escalated tensions across the Middle East, despite ongoing diplomatic efforts aimed at preventing a broader regional conflict.

The US Central Command (CENTCOM) said the operation targeted missile launch facilities and Iranian boats allegedly involved in deploying naval mines near the Strait of Hormuz — one of the world’s most critical oil transit routes, carrying nearly 20% of global crude supplies. Washington described the strikes as a “defensive response” intended to safeguard American personnel and maintain secure maritime movement in the Gulf region.

American defence officials claimed the mission was conducted with “measured restraint” while ceasefire discussions remain active. CENTCOM spokesperson Captain Tim Hawkins stated that US forces would continue taking action against any threats linked to Iranian military operations in the area.

The escalation comes at a sensitive moment, with US and Iranian negotiators still engaged in talks in Qatar focused on regional security, maritime stability, and Tehran’s nuclear programme. However, the latest military action has intensified concerns that the already fragile diplomatic process could derail before a formal agreement is achieved.

Regional reports indicated explosions were heard near Bandar Abbas and nearby coastal zones close to the Strait of Hormuz shortly before Washington officially acknowledged the strikes. Iranian authorities have yet to issue a detailed response, although Tehran has repeatedly accused the US of breaching ceasefire understandings in recent weeks.

Global attention remains fixed on the Strait of Hormuz because of its central role in international energy trade. Any disruption in the narrow shipping corridor could send oil prices sharply higher and affect worldwide shipping activity. In response to rising tensions, several commercial shipping operators have reportedly reduced vessel movement through the Gulf.

Security experts say the latest developments underline the increasingly unstable nature of the US-Iran confrontation, where diplomatic negotiations and military pressure are unfolding side by side. Although Washington insists it does not seek a wider war, repeated confrontations involving US forces and Iran-backed groups continue to fuel fears of deeper regional instability.

Financial markets are also closely tracking the situation, as investors worry that prolonged tensions around Hormuz could impact global energy supplies, drive inflation higher, and disrupt international trade in the weeks ahead.
