US Groups Fuel Rise of a New Anti-Abortion Activism Wave in the UK

A growing number of US-based organisations are playing a significant role in shaping a new generation of anti-abortion activism in the United Kingdom. Inspired by their political successes in the United States, including the reversal of Roe v. Wade, these groups are expanding their influence abroad by supporting British activists, funding campaigns, and promoting strategies used in American culture-war politics.

One of the most prominent organisations involved is the US-founded Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF), which has established a presence in the UK and works through legal advocacy, lobbying, and training programmes. The group has supported high-profile legal cases related to protests outside abortion clinics and frequently frames its work around “free speech” and religious liberty.

Funding and organisational support from American networks have also strengthened anti-abortion activism in Britain. Research indicates that dozens of organisations connected to US conservative and religious movements are operating in the UK, collectively spending tens of millions of pounds on campaigns that challenge reproductive rights and influence political debates.

These groups often promote tactics commonly used in the US, including street demonstrations, “crisis pregnancy centres,” and activist training aimed at recruiting younger campaigners. Events and conferences organised with international speakers encourage supporters to adopt long-term strategies to reshape public opinion and policy.

Despite this growing activism, abortion remains widely supported in the UK and is generally legal up to 24 weeks of pregnancy. However, experts warn that increased funding, political lobbying, and legal activism from US organisations could gradually bring American-style polarisation to the UK’s abortion debate.
