U.S. President Donald Trump has ordered all federal agencies to stop using artificial intelligence technology from Anthropic, escalating a major standoff with the AI company over its refusal to relent on ethical safeguards for military use.
U.S. President Donald Trump announced a sweeping directive requiring all federal government agencies to cease using AI technology from San Francisco–based startup Anthropic, marking a significant escalation in tensions between the government and the company.
The move stems from a dispute over how Anthropic’s AI models, notably its Claude chatbot, can be used by the U.S. military. The Pentagon and the Trump administration argued that Anthropic must allow broader access to its systems for defense purposes, while the company pushed back — insisting on ethical safeguards that limit use in mass surveillance or fully autonomous weapons.
In a post on his social platform, Trump said the government “will never allow a private company to dictate how our military fights and wins wars” and ordered agencies to discontinue use of Anthropic’s technology. The Pentagon has been given a six-month window to phase out the systems currently embedded in military platforms.
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth designated Anthropic a “supply-chain risk,” a label typically applied to foreign adversaries, potentially barring military contractors from doing business with the firm. Anthropic has vowed to legally challenge the designation and has defended its stance on ethical limits for AI deployment.
The dispute highlights growing friction over AI governance, national security considerations, and the ethical use of advanced technologies by both government and industry.
